2 "corny" questions for the farmers

I'm growing a couple corn patches around the house, haven't done this in a few years, it's already about 6 to 8 inches in 2 weeks.

	2 questions...

	1. How much do you folks water? (I give it a good soak once to twice daily,it's hot and bright here).

	2. Does anybody still use "Scarecrows"? (We don't have crows in Hawaii but we do have Mynah birds, last time we created "Mynah Man" with some old clothes, a volleyball-ala "Wilson", and a dredlock wig.) Is there really a need or a good alternative to these time honored skeletons of the corn?

Lastly, any other special tips? Mahalo, PH

Trying to play fast

Lately, I've been trying to play faster. One thing I've noticed is that the CH players I've watched who play fast play with what seems to be a very relaxed right hand. That, in turn, causes their index finger to flick a little bit. My problem is that this makes sense to me.

As a use-to-be pretty good athlete, I know that keeping as relaxed as you can facilitates quick movement. As an engineer, I also think the movement of the entire forearm, wrist, and hand as a solid unit involves the movement of a lot of mass, and that's detrimental to quick acceleration and deceleration. The finger can flick relatively quickly, and a relaxed hand and wrist would seem to make perfect sense for fast playing.

Does anyone agree, or if not, where the heck's the error in my thinking? I'm too old to waste much time going down the wrong track, but I've been practicing these things and I'm surprised how, in just a couple of weeks, my playing's become noticeably faster -- and the accuracy hasn't suffered, either. I'm very optimistic, but a good logical argument could persuade me to change my viewpoint.

How many days to learn a song for a beginner?

I know this question may have a lot of answers. I consider myself a beginner. Not one just starting but can only play 8 to 10 songs in one position. I can also play just a few licks down the neck and little backup. Anyway I have started about a month ago on a song that is a big challenge and I gave up on it after practicing 7 to 10 days on it. Last week I have started back on the song and actually can get thru the first verse with just a few mishaps. However its going to take probably another week or so to get thru the song for it to be acceptable.

I just kind of feel like I could have used that time in learning a lot of other stuff to make me better over all player. Of I guess you all are wondering the song it's Alan Munde's Peaches and Cream. (just the first verse). Some of it actually sounds pretty good.

Is It Really A Theory?

I have seen and heard this term "music theory" many times, but have been too busy trying to play notes on my investment, that until just recently I totally ignored looking into music theory. My ignorance was such that I was thinking in terms of a speculative thing - one of the definitions of the word "theory". But further self-education shed light on the fact that another definition of theory is a set of principles of a body of fact. This is the one that is relevant to music theory. The principles that relate to the factual structure of music and how it is made. So now it makes more sense to me. I am still on theory 101. Jack Hatfield's backup book, which I am working through as we speak, dedicates some pages to this, complementing the material contained herein that actually teaches backup techniques (there are also songs with backup tabs). But hats off to Jack for including this theory section so that if any reader is still somewhat ignorant on theory, they can become better educated, and therefore understand a little better not only what they are doing but why, and how it fits into the major (pun intended) scheme of things in the world of music. The "Circle of Fifths" is a fascinating tool and part of this new revelation bundle too. Great job on the book, Jack.

Gold Tone CCOT upgrades

I have a Gold Tone CCOT, just got it a few months ago. Love it. It has a rolled brass tone ring, the Fiberskyn banjo head, No Knot tailpiece, Vega-style armrest, vintage Fairbanks headstock design, and geared tuners.

What kind of upgrades could I do on this that would be reasonably priced? I love the banjo, so I’m not looking for another so much, as just to make it better and enjoy the craft. I see some with nylgut strings, for example, and different tone ring, (cocobolo tone ring) and better tuning pegs, (planetary) though I would have holes on the side from the old pegs? And a better banjo head. And I’ve been using Martin medium gauge strings.

I like to tinker and want to get more into the craft. :) Any advice would be much appreciated.

Adding wood to a rim,,can it be done?

I owned this banjo for two years now,,I wont say where it came from,,it retails for almost 5k but it doesn't suprise me,,I broke the rim down to check on the tone ring number, only to find out,,to much wood had been lathed from the side fit for the tone ring,,so what did they do,,they added masking tape where the neck joins and the tailpiece area,,the rest of the tone ring sides i suspect were not even touching the rim,,Id like to keep the rim to keep it all original,,my question is,,can a veneer or thin strips be added to the rim and then machined to make a good fit for the tone ring,,sounds possible,,any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks to everyone.

What bridge height is most popular on bluegrass banjos?

I picked up a bridge the other day from a friend who makes 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", and 3/4" bridges. I was wondering which size, if the action was not an issue, is most popular with most bluegrass banjoists?

I started with 1/2" and worked my way up to 11/16" for good now. I've tried 3/4", but it's a little too high for me.

Tone ring from Stew-Mac

Stewart-MacDonald has a round rod tone ring that sits right on top of the rim. The reviews on their website are positive, but I'm still a little wary of jumping on it. The rod is a little over 1/4 inch in diameter and requires a mid to high crown head.

I haven't been able to locate any installation instructions, but it seems to me that the tone ring would raise the head up too high above the finger board.

Has anyone tried this tone ring?

 http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Banjo:_Tone_rings/Round_Rod_Tone_Ring.html?actn=100101&xst=3&xsr=110141

Poll: Dispensible Techniques?

There's been a good bit of discussion lately about whether or not drop-thumbing is necessary or even advisable. Just out of curiosity, are there other techniques that folks tend not to use in their playing on an individual basis? As for myself, double-thumbing (that is the steady alternation of the 5th string with another string) and thumb lead are very rare in my playing as it has evolved.

It might also be interesting to include why one opts for not using a particular technique.

In my case, I just don't care for the double-thumb effect (of course maybe I just can't make it sound good!!!). As for thumb lead, it's not necessary in any of the tunes I play.

The arbor guy on the door to trim the cherry tree and peach trees...okay. I told him to MAKE SURE TO CLOSE GATE.

He did. I watched. He best. With Katy stone deaf, she cannot be out on the road. Or loose from property.

 SOOO..........Solution.

Make "fake grave" and on marker:

HERE LIES THE LAST COWBOY THAT LEFT THIS GATE OPEN.

I know quite a few songs to sing in A and G, not so many in C and D.

What are your favorite songs to sing in C and D?

Don Reno's "Double Banjo Blues" (Full Band)

This cut features an outstanding bass break by my good friend Hans Wolters........he came over from Holland a few years ago to record a CD with us, and this was the 2nd track from it......This is probably my favorite song of Don Reno's to play......I added my own stuff at the end, same licks I did in the video with Eddie Adcock.........but I gotta say, my favorite part is my grandpa's Lester Flatt-guitar break lol......thanks for listening! Hope you all like it!

Stabilized Wood...Interesting Stuff

I am building two banjos. One is a Curly Maple with the 5th string going all the way to the peg head. The other is Walnut and I have decided to use stabilized wood for the binding and for the inlays. The stabilized wood is a Box Elder Burl that is double stabilized with blue and mahogany coloring. The wood is acrylic impregnated. This process makes the wood heavier and harder. It sands and cuts just like normal. It does tend to break in areas that may contain a flaw. Many different colors are available. The only problem is I cannot find it in sizes longer than 7 1/2 inches and wider then 2 inches as the wood is used mostly for knife and gun handles. I have been told that the process tends to twist the wood and that is the reason you do not find longer lengths. Any wood can be stabilized and gives us another option for building unique instruments.

The first pic shows the wood with and without finish. Others are the resonator with one coat of finish.
